Purple Top Turnip

This brassica is an affordable plant to put in the ground when nutrient scavenging is wanted. Purple top turnips provide high energy and protein to cattle when grazed. This turnip can handle three days of 15°F temperatures before it finally is killed off. Since turnips are often put in mixes that will be grazed, it is important to note that since they are great at scavenging nitrogen and storing it in their tuber, high nitrates might be a concern if the mixture is brassica heavy or they field has a high concentration in one section of it. The top 1/3rd of the turnip will remain out of the ground, making it easier to pull and eat for livestock which could lead to some choking hazards in smaller livestock.

Also known as canola, this brassica is very versatile and offers a range of benefits for reasonable cost. The taproot is great at breaking up compaction, building soil and accumulating nutrients. All the while making for a great forage option with a quick emergence. Rapeseed can offer more, longer term carbon to build soil OM when compared to radish. If it intends to be grazed, high nitrates may be concern depending on field condition, species/rate of the mix and stocking rate.

Nitro Radish

Radishes are probable one of the more popular cover crop species and rightly so for the numerous benefits they provide above and below ground. The big taproot that they produce is great for breaking up compaction and at the same time is fantastic for scavenging nitrogen from deep in the ground. There are two common types of radishes: daikon and oilseed. The daikon radish is geared towards putting on the big taproot and at the same time putting out a solid amount of above ground mass which is perfect for fall grazing. The oilseed is great for suppressing nematode populations, but still provide lateral taproots coupled with a fibrous root system. The “Nitro Radish” is one of the most requested and recognizable radish names there is.

Impact Forage Collards

This cool season brassica is one of North 40 Ag’s favorite plants to put into mixes because of its production and ease of establishment. It has been shown to produce all over the state of Montana without difficulty making it easier to put into mixes. In addition to being very versatile, Impact Collards have been shown as being very winter hardy, often surviving temperatures down to 0°F before dying which makes for fantastic late season grazing. Lastly, but certainly not least, this plant produces a terrific taproot which appears to put off quite a bit of root exudates exhibited by the amount of soil attached to it when it is taken out of the ground.

African Cabbage

The taproot produced by this plant closely resembles that of rapeseed as opposed to radish. A benefit to having this brassica instead of the others, is that when it’s life cycle is complete, it has a higher carbon to nitrogen ratio than the others, which makes for great residue and organic matter building. In addition to residue building, African cabbage has been noted as being fairly heat tolerant and performing well even on poor soils.
