Annual ryegrass is great way to build soil structure while being affordable. A fairly quick growing winter annual, it is best suited to be planted in the early spring or in the early fall. Known for it’s extensive fibrous root system, annual rye is a great way to improve water infiltration and water holding efficiency. It’s also an economical forage in comparison to perennial ryegrass, but not near as winter hardy. Lastly, annual ryegrass has been shown to be a terrific weed suppressor when planted ahead of no-till corn or soybeans.
