Hairy Vetch

This cool season legume is the most winter hardy of the vetches, having been shown to handle temperatures down to 5F with little to no cover. This vetch is also a great option for attracting beneficial insects. Hairy vetch, when planted in the spring starts out slow, but by fall it will have put on a good amount of biomass which will also help in out competing weeds. It has been shown to sometimes be an issue trying to control with Roundup.

A viney cool season legume, common vetch is ideal when cost is a concern, but fixing N is still a main part of the overall goal. When planted in the spring, it is rather slow to grow but will put on good biomass in the fall. This is a great legume for grazing, because of its palatability and high crude protein content. It does need to be noted that due to its hard seed, there have been some cases of common vetch being hard to control in years following.

From our experience of planting it on our dryland, sunn hemp did well despite the lack of moisture it needs. All in all, it has potential of being applied more across Montana but more testing needs to be done for us to feel confident in using it.

Soybeans have been shown to produce a good number of nodules when fixing nitrogen, which is beneficial to the crop following. While not producing the highest amount of forage, they still produce adequate amounts if given enough growing degrees and moisture. A nice taproot on these helps in penetrating compaction layers and bringing up subsoil moisture that otherwise, isn’t available.

Winter peas, in comparison to spring peas, don’t have the spring vigor which don’t make for as good of grazing in a smaller timeframe. Winter peas are more cold tolerant which makes it desirable for producers wishing to have a late fall/winter grazing option. They are a legume, meaning they will fix nitrogen and since their residue breaks down faster the nitrogen is more readily available in comparison to other legumes.

Spring forage peas are a favorite of North 40 Ag’s when putting together cover crop mixes. The rapid growth produced by these peas, aids in suppressing weeds and at the same time, providing a quality forage for producers wanting to graze. Since peas are a legume, they will fix nitrogen, benefitting the crop following this mix. Peas often make it into our mixes, but if used in a heavy pulse crop rotation, it wouldn’t be recommended in having peas in your mix. If used in a heavy small grain rotation, peas have been shown to reduce the impact of take-all in wheat.
