Triticale is a cool season grass, that is a cross between wheat and rye. It produces the tonnage of cereal rye with the quality of wheat. When planted in the fall, it can be expected to be hayed around the first week or 10 days of May, depending on location. We offer a spring and winter triticale, depending on what your goals are. Its important to note that high nitrates could be an issue if conditions allow for it. If unsure, its best to have it tested.

Teff grass is a warm season grass capable producing fantastic quality hay. The only thing restricting it, is its ability to get established. Since it is so fine seeded, 1.3 million seeds/lb, its been difficult to get seeded at a proper depth to give it a chance at competing. If seeded as a monoculture, its been documented as having yields comparable to that of Timothy grass. There aren’t any issues with teff grass having prussic acid or nitrate issues.

This warm season grass is a great option when residue building, grazing and increasing organic matter are desired. This plant features a smaller stem but more leaf structure than a sorghum or sorghum-sudan, which makes it extremely palatable with terrific forage quality. Sudan grasses and sorghum-sudan grasses have been reported as not competing well with very diverse mixes, so it’s better to keep the number of species simple. The risk for prussic acid in sudan grass is the lowest among the warm season grasses.

Wildlife Grain Sorghum

Wildlife grain sorghum is an ideal plant when attracting and keeping birds is the goal. This sorghum differs from the rest of the sorghums we offer because this one is bred to produce seed, which is why upland birds and waterfowl prefer it. During the dough and milk stages of grain fill, the seeds have a bitter taste which deters predatory birds such as sparrows, blackbirds and starlings. This bitter taste dissipates when the plant reaches maturity, making it appealing to wildlife. In addition to it producing grain, this sorghum will also leaving quite a bit of residue in the field which is great cover for birds.

Sorghum-Sudan when compared to sudan grass, has a larger stem and less leaf matter, but is still high in forage quality and will produce more biomass. A dense, fibrous root system will help alleviate surface compaction, prevent erosion and accumulate nitrogen. If you have grazing in mind, but cost is a concern, the non-BMR version is still extremely palatable and coupled with its quick growth capabilities, creates a desired forage very rapidly. It does need to be noted that because of its nutrient scavenging abilities, high nitrates might be an issue. Also, because this is a variety of sorghum, prussic acid is a concern depending on field and weather conditions. While risk is low, it’s best to have it checked if there is a concern.

The BMR varieties of sorghum-sudan have a reduced lignin content which makes it more palatable with a higher protein content and a higher overall feed value. Annual ryegrass is great way to build soil structure while being affordable. A fairly quick growing winter annual, it is best suited to be planted in the early spring or in the early fall. Known for it’s extensive fibrous root system, annual rye is a great way to improve water infiltration and water holding efficiency. It’s also an economical forage in comparison to perennial ryegrass, but not near as winter hardy. Lastly, annual ryegrass has been shown to be a terrific weed suppressor when planted ahead of no-till corn or soybeans.

Cereal rye is a great option for grazing in the spring and fall. If broadcasting into a standing crop for after harvest grazing potential, cereal rye is desired because of it’s ability to produce under limited sunlight. Along with grazing, cereal rye is a great option for weed suppression and loosening topsoil from compaction because of its fibrous root system. Cereal rye will still produce even when planted into less than ideal soil conditions (sandy, infertile and droughty). It does need to be noted that cereal rye can run the risk of high nitrates because of its ability to scavenge nitrogen. Also, if the producer is in a small grain rotation, we don’t like to use cereal rye in a mix.

Spring oats are a terrific plant that gets out of the ground quick which helps in knocking back weeds. They’re also a great option when wanting to graze in the summertime and contribute in the residue building process. Spring oats also have a dense, fibrous root system which helps in building soil structure. It needs to be noted that oats, like other small grains, can have issues with nitrates in drought situations.
