This cool season legume is the most winter hardy of the vetches, having been shown to handle temperatures down to 5F with little to no cover. This vetch is also a great option for attracting beneficial insects. Hairy vetch, when planted in the spring starts out slow, but by fall it will have put on a good amount of biomass which will also help in out competing weeds. It has been shown to sometimes be an issue trying to control with Roundup.
